چکیده

1996. LIGNUM: a tree model based on simple structural units. Annals of Botany, volume 77, number 1, pages 87-98. The model LIGNUM treats a tree as a collection of a large number of simple units which correspond to the organs of the tree. The model describes the three dimensional structure of the tree crown and defines the growth in terms of the metabolism taking place in these units. The activities of physiological processes can be explicitly related to the tree structures in which they are taking place. The time step is 1 year. The crown of the model tree consists of tree segments, branching points and buds. Each pair of tree segments is separated by a branching point. The buds produce new tree segments, branching points and buds. The tree segments contain wood, bark and foliage. A model tree consisting of simple elements translates conveniently to a list structure : the computer program implementing LIGNUM treats the tree as a collection of lists. The annual growth of the tree is driven by available photosynthetic products after respiration losses are accounted for. The photosynthetic rate of foliage depends on the amount of light. The amount of photosynthates allocated to the growth of new tree segments is controlled by the light conditions and the amount of foliage on the mother tree segment. In principle, the biomass relationships of the tree parts follow the pipe model hypothesis. The orientation of new tree segments results from the application of constant branching angles. LIGNUM has been parametrized for young Scots pine (Pinus sylestris L.) trees. However, the model is generic ; with a change of parameter values and minor modifications it can be applied to other species as well.

LIGNUM: a model combining the structure and the functioning of trees

The model LIGNUM treats a tree as a collection of a large number of simple units that correspond to the organs of a tree. The model describes the three-dimensional structure of the tree crown and derives growth in terms of the metabolism taking place in these units. The time step is one year. The structural units are: tree segments, branching points and buds. Tree segments are separated by bran...

Incorporating Lindenmayer systems for architectural development in a functional-structural tree model

LIGNUM is a functional-structural tree model that represents coniferous and broad-leaved trees with modelling units corresponding to the real structure of trees. The units are tree segments, axes, branching points and buds. Metabolic processes are explicitly related to the structural units in which they take place. This paper enhances the modelling capabilities of LIGNUM with the possibility to...

Extension of a single tree functional-structural model to stand level

The functional-structural tree model LIGNUM (Perttunen et al., 1996; Perttunen and Sievänen, 2005) has been originally constructed to be applied to single trees. The above ground part of the coniferous and the deciduous trees is modeled with structural units. They are tree segment, branching point and bud. So far the root system is represented with a single variable denoting its mass. LIGNUM co...

A grammar based model for juvenile Scots pines as an aggregation of LIGNUM

A model for the growth of juvenile Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.), including a functional and a structural component, is presented. The trees are growing in the understorey of a gap. Our work has two main focuses. The first is to introduce rule-based languages into the scope of individual-based tree stand modeling with simplified crown structures like those utilized, e.g., by the forest simu...
